Setting up an iPhone with SBS standard

Posted in WM5 at 3:38 pm by webmaster

Hooking up an iPhone (second generation released Summer 2008) to Small Business Server 2003 is relatively straightforward.  Contrary to some other posts out there the SBS self signed certificate works just fine.

Verification

  • Verify Exchange SP2 is installed
  • Verify oma is opened in CEICW (Not 100% sure this is required)
  • Port 443 is open and redirected to SBS (ala owa)
  • Verify your iPhone is of the generation that supports activesync

Gather Network Information

  • External name is mail.somedomain.com
    • Verify with CEICW
  • Netbios domain name is SOMEDMN
    • Verify with Active Directory Domains and Trusts

Hot Swapping eSata drives

Posted in OS at 11:23 am by webmaster

There is a great utility (32 and 64 bit support) called hotswap that allows you to safely prepare a drive that can not be controlled by the Windows “Safely eject drive” feature.

It is called hotswap, has a command line interface and comes in 32 and 64 bit flavours.

I tested it with a Vantec UGT-ST300 eSata card from Vantec in a Windows Small Business Server 2003 system.  It appears to work well.
