Posted in OS, win2003, SBS2003, Vista, Windows XP, Windows Vista at 11:31 pm by webmaster

A recent discussion came up in sbs2k3 Yahoo group about the various software IT Professionals use to inventory their LAN.  Quite a few software packages were brought up that I had never heard of. A summary is included here:

  1. angryip - simple powerful network scanner to obtain IP and MAC address (No install required)
  2. SIW - standalone tool (No install required, technician license available (No install required)
  3. produkey - obtain product keys of software installed on your computer (No install required)
  4. SteelInventory - freeware
  5. SYDI - vbscript
  6. OCS Next Generation Inventory system - open source, (agent install)
  7. spiceworks - web based
  8. Kaseya - Enterprise class
  9. Prodoc - Computer renditions vbscript
  10. Houndog
  11. Network Veiw USB key, not free trial or demo may be available
  12. Loginventory
  13. Portable Utilities for the USB Drive Not sure what this is
  14. SNNP Tools 1, 2, SNMP Informant , webgetif
  15.  Special K
  16. GFI

If these tools are “network aware” you can open up the Windows Firewall to just allow TCP ports 445 and 135 from a specific IP address.

Setting Path:
Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Network/Network Connections/Windows Firewall/Domain Profile
Windows Firewall: Allow remote administration exception

Multiple Email Domains on SBS

Posted in OS at 9:26 am by webmaster

To handle multiple email domains, lets assume original.com is the original email domain configured with SBS.  The domain second.com will be the second email domain.

  1. Open Exchange System Manager and configure a second domain
    1. Start –> All Programs –> Microsoft Exchange –> System Manager
    2. Double click Recipients –> Recipient Policy –> Right Mouse Click Properties of the Default Policy
    3. New –> SMTP Address
    4. Type second.com in the address text field and verify the “This Exchange Organization is responsible for all mail delivery to this address” is checked
    5. click OK
    6. Tick the check box under ‘Type’
    7. Click Apply and you should be prompted to add the Address Type to all
existing email addresses. It will automatically affect all new user
accounts added, unless you have them excluded/excepted from being
updated by recipient policy (see checkbox at bottom of user properties >
      Email address tab)
  • All outbound messages will be from the default domain that you have defined for a given user in the properties of their AD user account.
  • To send from another address (or domain) already defined in ESM, in the new mail message, click on the arrow to the right of Options in the new mail window and click “From” to reveal the from line (if you are not using Word as the email editor, click View menu –> and select “From” to show the from line). Type the valid ‘from’ address and that’s who it will appear to come from.

Office 2003/2007 compatibility

Posted in Office at 1:09 am by webmaster

Most organizations are now deploying both Offiice 2003 and Office 2007.  Depending on you situation you may want to allow Office 2003 to open (not save) an Office 2007 document.  You may also simply want to configure Office 2007 to automatically save in the Office 97-2003 format.

Configure Office 2003 to read Office 2007 files

Configure Office 2007 to save using the Office97-2003 format by default using using Group Policy

Configure Word 2007 to save using the Office 97-2003 format by default Manually

  1. In Word 2007, click the Office button (the big round button at the top left of the Window) and then click Word Options.
  2. In the Word Options dialog box, choose the Save category from the list on the left.
  3. Use the Save files in this format drop-down menu to choose the format you want Word 2007 to use by default. I use Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc).
  4. Click OK.
