Alternate WSSv3 Deployment with SBS Part 5 - Configure Email

We now have a WSS version 3 site up and functional in a SBS domain on a member server.  We want all of the bells and whistles so we will configure both outgoing and incoming email. 

 This article from the community and this article from Microsoft were used as the basis for this section of the configuration. 

On the member Server (Running WSSv3)

  1.  Verify Windows SharePoint Services Web Application service service is running
    1. Start –> Administrative Tools –> Sharepoint 3.0 Central Administration
    2. Operations –> Topology and Services section –> Services on server
    3. Verify Windows SharePoint Services Web Application is started
  2.  Install SMTP service
    1. Control Panel –> Add or Remove Programs
    2. Add/Remove Windows Components.
    3. Application Server–> Details
    4. Subcomponents –> Internet Information Services –> Details
    5. select the SMTP Service check box.
    6. OK
    7. OK
    8. Next
    9. Completing the Windows Components Wizard
    10. Finish
  3. Configure SMTP
    1. Start –> All Programs –> Administrative Tools –> Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. 
    2. server name 
    3. Right-click  –> SMTP virtual server  –> Properties 
    4. Access tab –> Access control –> Authentication. 
    5. Select acceptable authentication methods for this resource, verify that Anonymous access is selected. 
    6. OK. 
    7. Access tab –> Relay restrictions –> Relay. 
    8. Under Select which computer may relay through this virtual server, select Only the list below.
    9. Add –> add servers one at a time by IP address (Add the SBS Servers IP address here)
    10. OK
    11. OK
    12. OK
  4. Configure Drop Email Folder - Optional - Not required but an important step if you are going to use this feature.  For the purposes of this post we will add a contact manually in Exchange to getbthe mail delivered to the correct location
    1. Determine Windows Sharepoint Services Timer Service Account by looking at services log on properties (Network Service)
    2. Open Explorer, Navigate to a location on the data drive and create tyhe drop folder (C:\wssdrop)
    3. Right Mouse Click –> Sharing and Security –> Security Tab
    4. Add “Network Service”
    5. Add “WSS_ADMIN_WPG”
    6. Add “WSS_WPG”
    7. Click Allow Modify for all three groups
    8. OK

On The SBS Server

  1. Create an organizational unit in Active Directory
    1. Start –> Control Panel –> Administrative Tools, –> Active Directory Users and Computers.
    2. In Active Directory Users and Computers, select the folder for the second-level domain that contains your server farm.
    3. Right-click the folder –> New –> Organizational Unit.
    4. Type the name of the organizational unit “wss3″
    5. OK.
  2. After creating the organization unit, it is recommended that you delegate the Create, delete, and manage user accounts right to the container. - Optional not required.  see note above
    1. Delegate right to the application pool account
    2. In Active Directory Users and Computers, select the organizational unit that you just created. (wss3)
    3. Right-click the organizational unit –> Delegate control.
    4. select the Create, delete, and manage user accounts check box.
    5. type the name of the application pool account.
    6. Finish
  3.   Configure MX Record
    1. Create an MX record which points to the member server (Example win2003 –> win2003.visionit.local)
  4. Configure SMTP Connector
    1. Forward all maill through this smarthost - IP of your member server
    2. Select the standard SBS bridgehead server
    3. Address Space - Use same name as MX

On the member Server (Running WSSv3)

  1. Configure Incoming Email
    1. Start –> Administrative Tools –> Sharepoint 3.0 Central Administration
    2. admininstrator/password
    3. Select Operations –> Topology & Services –> Incoming Email Settings
      1. Enable Incoming EMail - Yes
      2. Settings Mode - Auto
      3. Directory Mangagment Services - No
      4. Email server Display Address - Should match your MX record
      5. Safe Senders - Accept mail from all
      6. OK
  2. Configure Outgoing Email
    1. Start –> Administrative Tools –> Sharepoint 3.0 Central Administration
    2. admininstrator/password
    3. Select Operations –> Topology & Services –> Incoming Email Settings
      1. Outbound SMTP Server - SBS IP address
      2. From Address -
      3. Reply To -
      4. OK

On The SBS Server

  1. For every email enabled item in sharepoint create a contact in the OU you created to point to list@InternalDomainName (Same as MX)
  2. As long as you have a correct external MX this is now accesible both internally and externally on the internet

Switching to new eSATA product

Seagate has now released a new eSATA product. 

 It has both eSATA and USB 2 interfaces for maximum flexibility.  There is a 750 MB version that comes with a 5 year warranty.  Beware no eSATA cable shipped with the product and a little on the expensive side.
